Day Two in Hot-lanta

There are two things that surprise a traveler and three that make one shake one’s aching head: experiences that surpass the hype, overhyped experiences that don’t, and genuine patterns of bad business.
The Georgia Aquarium truly is a modern marvel.? It’s one of those buildings that’s twice as big inside as it looks outside, and every [...]

Myth-Making at the Science Museum

Day one of our in-state vacation is in the bag.? In the morning we visited the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, and after a late lunch, we spent the afternoon swimming in the hotel’s pool, ordered pizza to the hotel room, and went back out swimming after a bit of Cartoon Network to kill time [...]

Off to Hot-lanta

I’ll admit that this is my kind of vacation, the kind that only takes an hour and a half to return from.? We depart tomorrow morning, stopping along the way to take care of some paperwork in Dacula, and we’re spending the day at the Fern Bank natural history museum in Atlanta.? Then we’ll proceed [...]

The Home Stretch

As far as I can tell, we’ll be headed back to Georgia either Saturday or Sunday, taking off early in the morning and driving until late at night.? It’s been a good two-week-and-change visit, a different sort than some previously because of Mary’s pregnancy and because we’ve spent the last seven days taking care of [...]

Gilmour Gazetteer

Yesterday we hit Winslow and Oakland City and Micah’s grandparents.
Today Micah and the grandparents went to Chuck E Cheese while Mary and I took an afternoon to relax together.
Tomorrow we hit the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.
It’s been a good week.? I feel ready to hit the ground running when to Athens we return.

Micah at Victory Field

Yes, that is a boy with a baseball. And yes, it was a game ball.? After dozens of minor league baseball games, most of them in Indianapolis, I finally caught a foul ball.? And I did so over a UGA Ph.D in political science sitting in front of me.? Small world.

Some Nietzsche for the Road

Precocious Breakfast Conversation
I’m driving all day today.? How much thought does that allow?

On the Road Again

VBS ends tonight.
We pack after that.
We sleep a bit after that.
Tomorrow morning we set out on GA-316, then I-85, then I-75, then I-24, then I-65, then I-465, then IN-267.
Then a week with Grandma and Grandpa Gilmour.
[edit: The subtext here, of course, is that I do intend to reply to comments soon.? This week has not [...]

American Evangelicalism, Then and Now

I’m back in town from Toccoa, Georgia and from the “American Evangelicalism: Then & Now” conference that officially wraps up tomorrow but whose second day I won’t be attending, having to work at Bogart Library.
My paper was in the second of a series of parallel paper sessions, and although I did face a rather animated [...]

Christmas 2008 Pics, part 1

And now… the much-awaited Christmas 2008 galleries! Today I’ll post West Virginia; tomorrow, Indiana.

Travel and Confession

No, I didn’t commit any particularly memorable sins while traveling for Christmas–I did exhibit the standard shortness of temper that comes with sleeping too little in beds not my own and American-style gluttony at most meals, but nothing that more sleep and smaller portions wouldn’t fix.
Nonetheless I found myself reflecting on the genre of confession [...]

Christmas in Oakland City

Merry Christmas to everyone.? I’m about to turn in after a long day of visiting with family, but I might wake up early enough tomorrow to write a bit about our travels.

Taking Heidegger up to Indiana

So here I am in Plainfield, I hope.? As you might have surmised, I’m writing this in Georgia but scheduling it for the day after we’re supposed to drive.
On the last few trips I’ve brought some sort of epic narrative with me so that I could enjoy some people hitting each other with spears rather [...]

Seven Days to Liftoff

This time next week I’ll be packing and (hopefully) sleeping to get ready for the long trip north.? Lots of driving.? Lots of driving.
But it’ll be good.

Mr. K is Dead to Me

We hauled six boxes of books, most in very good shape, up to Johnson City, trusting that Mr. K’s, formerly the best used book store in our sphere of influence, would give us great trade credit and allow us to grab some seminarians’, Milliganders’ and elementary teachers’ books and enjoy them back in Georgia.
They took [...]

Johnson City Road Trip

Mary and I took off yesterday morning for lovely Johnson City, Tennessee, and tonight we’re at the close of two good days together.? We’ve seen Paul (briefly), Emily, and John Helphinstine, who graciously allowed us to stay with them, and today we spent the afternoon with Dave, Brooke, and Carloine Peccia.? Along the way we’ve [...]

Summer Trip 2008 Burd Segment

Back Home Again in… Statham, Georgia

So we’re back.? After ten hours behind the wheel, we stopped by the house to make sure no damage was done, turn the AC on after sixteen days of idleness, and let Micah go to the bathroom.? Then we grabbed a burrito at Barberitos, grabbed some milk and cereal for tomorrow morning, and returned to [...]
