Bring out the GIMP

I fiddled around with GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) a bit yesterday, and it’s got everything that I use on Photoshop. Once again, it’s amazing how a global community of geeks with vaguely socialistic leanings can design programs as good as or better than their expensive counterparts. I have been OpenOffice.org instead of MS Office, Mozilla Firefox instead of MS Internet Explorer, and Ubuntu instead of Windows XP/Vista for a while, and now I think I’ve found another freeware program that I can add to my never-going-to-pay-money-for-it-again list. Once I figure out how to install the Windows emulator (for Bible Works) and the DVD playing software (for DVD’s) on my laptop, I really do think that I’ll be able to convert the whole machine to Ubuntu Linux. There’s no big hurry, as I still have well over eight gigabytes free on the hard drive, but it would be nice to add twenty-five more gigs to that.

I’m really starting to think that Windows stinks and Macs stink for more money. I certainly don’t think of computers the same way since I turned to the Ubuntu side.

    the GIMP rocks!!

I love Kubuntu… I’m running it on my mom’s Dell Inspiron 1000 Lappy and on an old p3 I had lying around… my main machine is a Mac… (they don’t stink, btw and certainly not for more money… you just need to be sure you’re comparing apples to apples (no pun intended) when you compare apple and pc pricing) good luck w/ all your endeavors w/ ubuntu… if u need any help, let me know… i’m not a guru but i’ve messed around w/ it quite a bit

    cheers,
    matty

For what I do with computers (that is to say mainly writing, web design, and some low-grade graphics work), it makes no sense to spend thirteen hundred bucks for a mac when I could get a low-end PC laptop for four hundred bucks (three hundred the day after Thanksgiving) and reformat it as a Linux machine.

If I were doing professional grade video work (and no, youth ministry doesn’t count), perhaps I could justify spending the extra nine hundred bucks. But as it stands, I can do everything I do with computers and spend money only on the hardware.

Spending nine hundred dollars I don’t have to stinks.

Thus Macs stink, and for more money. :)

This convoluted quasi-syllogism brought to you by your friendly neighborhood English teacher.

Let me know how GIMP works out for you, Wizzle.

It took me a bit of time to get my eyes used to its interface, but it has layers and lasso selection and all the other amateur features that I actually know how to use on PS, so I figure that’s worth the six hundred bucks that Adobe wants to charge me for the features I don’t know how to use.

Dude, I have no idea how to use it!!! :o

    LOL

I didn’t even look at the site to see if there’s a tutorial or some such thing. It translates so well out of Photoshop that I really didn’t need one.

How much have you used PS in the past?

  7. Jonathan says:

    :) Not since high school.

  8. GIMP is Nice, I was using GIMP 2 years
